Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a family of technologies that provides digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL originally stood for digital subscriber loop. In telecommunications marketing, the term Digital Subscriber Line is widely understood to mean Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), the most commonly installed technical variety of DSL. DSL service is delivered simultaneously with regular telephone on the same telephone line. This is possible because DSL uses a higher frequency. These frequency bands are subsequently separated by filtering. The data throughput of consumer DSL services typically ranges from 384 KB/s to 20 Mbit/s in the direction to the customer (downstream), depending on DSL technology, line conditions, and service-level implementation. In ADSL, the data throughput in the upstream direction, (i.e. in the direction to the service provider) is lower, hence the designation of asymmetric service. In Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) service, the downstream and upstream data rates are equal. Voice and dataDSL uses a second, higher frequency band (greater than 25 kHz) above the low frequency regime (5 kHz and below) used by voice communications. On the customer premises, a DSL filter is installed on each outlet for telephone handsets to remove the high frequency band, eliminating interference with the operation of the telephone set, and enabling simultaneous use. My cousin has a computer that was given to him. He already had a connection running from the router in the kitchen to his room, with his roommate's pc in the kitchen right beside the router. Not sure if this an actual network as they are not connected by a server. But anyway, they have Verizon DSL. He had the Verizon dsl software installed on his old computer, but the cd(s) ended up getting lost. Well, we got the new computer hooked up to the dsl connection in the apartment (typing on it right now) without using the Verizon DSL software cd(s), and he also has Avast anti-virus installed on his computer. No, he does not have to install the software on the second computer. Just hook it straight to the router. Just be sure to hook up the phone line filters as specified in the instructions. Q. I am buying a house out in the country and there is no way to get high speed internet. There are no DSL lines, no cable, and the 3G coverage is patchy. ATT is the phone carrier.
