Question about anonymous web browsing?
Q. When surfing online anonymously, through the TOR network for instance, is it that *I* am anonymous and not the information being sent, or is the information anonymous and invisible as well? I'm just wondering if I get set up that way if I could send sensitive information online securely? Thanks.
Asked by air - Sat Oct 3 03:52:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Anonymous web browsing is simply using a proxy to hide the IP address, or originating IP of the computer sending the packets of data. The data being sent is still open to normal interception. If it is sensitive information, you may want to look at using a free email such as hushmail that encrypts all information being sent. You could also look at encrypting the file on your pc, submitting via FTP, and allowing the receiving party to download, and giving the encryption key to decipher. Best of luck

A. You can do that at home. Bypassing your school's internet filters is a violation of their internet use policy and will get you suspended or revoked with your internets access.

Mac OS X: Remain locally anonymous?
Q. I am running tests on my home network, and for reasons that would take too long to explain, I need my MacBook to remain completely undetectable. I will run the tests from a temporary user account, turning off all sharing, and turning on "Stealth Mode" in my firewall. I have changed the name of the computer in case anything is logged. I use KisMAC with my AirPort Extreme card in passive mode for the first battery of tests, and then use the network in active card mode to gather more information. Using these settings, as well as browsing the web through a maskedIP.com proxy, am I detectable at all? (After changing the Mac settings back to normal)
Asked by Nathan A - Sat Jan 23 15:24:22 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The proxy will leak your true IP address via java, flash and other means. It is not even close to being secure much less anonymous.

Can my ISP know when exactly i am 'private browsing'?
Q. Firefox3.5 and later, and other browsers provide "Private Browsing," which allows you to browse the Internet without the browser retaining any of data about which sites and pages you have visited, which includes- Web cache files,Visited pages,Form and Search Bar entries,Passwords,Downloa d List entries and Cookies. However they also state that " Private Browsing is not a tool to keep you anonymous from websites or your ISP". So my ISP can know the pages i have visited. But will my ISP know exactly (the time) when i'm on 'private browsing' mode?
Asked by qqqqqqqq - Sun Jul 12 03:52:57 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Private browsing is LOCAL setting. It's supposed to make your browser "NOT remember" what you did. It has nothing to do with your ISP. By the way, have you tried using something like Ccleaner AFTER so called Private Browsing? CCleaner finds and cleans a bunch of things, that should not be there since your browser 'doesn't remember" them. Looks like it does not work as advertised.

Proxies at school...?
Q. At my school they have a filter in the network that blocks just about everything. (This filter is in the network, it's not a program installed on the computer) For a while we had a great working proxy called mathwhizzer.com (.com i think..) But someone obviously got caught or squealed because it's blocked now. You can't even look up anything containing the word "Proxy" on google, msn, yahoo, aol, and any other search engine you can think of. So, instead I look up the words "anonymous browsing at school" (and other similar words) and I still get lists of proxies, but not nearly the amount of results when I could actually look up "Proxy". So, the question here is do you know of any working proxies that will actually work, and do not… [cont.]

A. I don't think they audit logs to block certain sites. Usually it's very well handled by filtering software itself. Modern day filtering software are very smart that it will block virtually everything that smells fishy. If you can't google for fresh prxies - get yourself hooked up to a source for new prxies so if they block a one you have new ones. Please see the link below at sources section for a yahoo group sending out new prxies in daily email. Also I have included a new prxy to get you started.

Anonymous Surfing?
Q. Is there really an actual software that has the following features: -secures all browsing info from anybody, including your ISP -does NOT keep logs -is highly secure and untraceable -is free I'm just asking because I was curious as to the privacy of any single particular internet user. I myself like the idea of privacy in surfing the web. I know that such a software or service is rare, so don't tell me that this question is unreasonable.

A. There's always something that can be traced. The best you can do is use an encrypted proxy for everything, and hope you can trust the people running it not to be logging everything themselves. I wouldn't trust folks running such proxies any farther than I could throw them.

Browsing with free web proxy servers: safer or not?
Q. Ok, there are so many free web proxy servers out there in the net. Some are transparent, some are anonymous and some of them support ssl which "enhance" security of their service. Most of them are php/cgi-based web proxy. While some service offer paid "pro" subscription, most of them are free (with adsense or popup ads). While the "pro" service might be trustworthy, what about those free services? It's true that by using the proxies we can hide our ip from website which we visit, but the proxy itself can read our data sent through it (as well as knowing our ip address).
