What is the angle of this light ray when it enters the water?
Q. An aquarium filled with water has flat glass sides whose index of refraction is 1.56. A beam of light from outside the aquarium strikes the glass at a 43.5 (degree) angle to the perpendicular . the angle of this light ray when it enters the glass= 26.2degrees Questions: What is the angle of the light ray when it enters the waterE What would be the refracted angle if the ray entered the water directly?

A. air-glass boundary> a[u]g = ug/ua = sin 43.5/sin26.2 ua = ref index of air (or vacuum) = 1 ug = 1.559 = 1.56 (as given) --- glass-water g[u]w = uw/ug = sin 26.2/sin (w) uw = 4/3 = 1.333 sin (w) = [1.56/1.333] sin 26.2 sin (w) = [1.56/1.333] sin 26.2 = 0.5167 w = sin^-1[0.5167] w = angle in water = 31.111 degree === if light entered directly uw/ua = sin 43.5/sin(w) = 1.333/1 sin(w) = 0.5164 w = 31.1 degree

Q. Cary hyperventilates for several minutes before diving into a swimming pool. Shortly after he enters the water and begins swimming, he blacks out and almost drowns. What caused this to happen?

A. 2 possibilities: First when you hyperventilate you are blowing off carbon dioxide.this makes your body more alkaline(respiratory alkalosis.)If you blood gets too alkaline you pass out. Second,since it is rising carbon dioxide levels that warn you that you need to breath you can run out of enough oxygen in your blood(and brain) without knowing you need to breath and pass out.

Q. Light enters a substance from air at an angle of incidence of 55 degrees. The light is refracted inside the substance to an angle of refraction of 35 degrees. What is the index of refraction of the substance?
Asked by filefinderhelp - Mon Jun 2 13:09:15 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Oops, I flipped Snell's Law (fixed it): SNELL'S LAW: sine(refracted angle) / sin (incident angle) = incident index / refracted index So the index of refraction of the substance is: n2 = n1 sin (theta1) / sin (theta2) They give you the angles. You can assume that the index of refraction of air is just one. Thumbs down to the answer below for copying a typo.
