A hospital is an institution for health care providing patient treatment by specialized staff and equipment, and often but not always providing for longer-term patient stays. Today, hospitals are usually funded by the state, by health organizations, (for profit or non-profit), health insurances or charities, including by direct charitable donations. In history, however, hospitals were often founded and funded by religious orders or charitable individuals and leaders. Similarly, modern-day hospitals are largely staffed by professional physicians, surgeons, and nurses, whereas in history, this work was usually done by the founding religious orders or by volunteers. TypesSome patients in a hospital come just for diagnosis and/or therapy and then leave ('outpatients'); while others are 'admitted' and stay overnight or for several weeks or months ('inpatients'). Once the immediate danger has been addressed, Dr.'s are advised by certain insurance companies to send the patient home. I had a c-section in the hospital one time, and they sent me home the next day, staples, clamps, and all. Things have changed from how they used to be. The hospital is a 45 minute drive from my house and we left once my contractions got to about 5 minutes apart. By the time we reached the hospital though, I was already 7 cm dialated and within a few more minutes - I was a 10 cm and pushing! My doctor broke my waters once I got to the hospital because he could already see my son's head being born and my water was still intact! If your hospital is pretty far away, I'd go early if I were you!
