A. Take a look at free open source OpenEMR: It has medical billing capability. I am not sure whether it has the specific features you are looking for. According to the web site, it is a replacement for medical applications such as Medical Manager, Health Pro, and Misys. You can download it and evaluate it. Try the Windows OpenEmr xampp package here. This is easy to install on a Windows PC:

Can a medical billing specialist use voice recognition software?
Q. I have arthritis in my hands and want to learn to use voice recognition software to avoid typing so much. I also want to find a job in the healthcare area, such as a medical billing specialist or something similar. Would it be possible to use speech-to-text software in this arena or a closely related one?
Asked by James Thundernuts - Fri Jul 3 03:29:17 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You could use it for MT but not coding. I mean it could "read" the medical report to you for you to abstract diagnosis, procedures, supplies, etc. However, there is not a lot of typing in coding/billing.

What is Composite Medical Procedure?
Q. I am working on Medical Billing software and want to know what is Composite Medical Procedure. I need to work on Electronic Medical Claim and Electronic Remittance modules. Please help if some one knows about it. Clinical Billers can answer it more appropriately. Thanx!
Asked by Xamir - Tue Apr 3 06:19:15 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A Composite is a dental filling, they are the white ones everybody wants. Composite is the name because of the materials used in the filling material- its a resin base with quartz, porcelain or other polymers. So instead of the old silver (amalgam) fillings they have been replaced by composite fillings. Do you need the procedure on how to place this type of filling?

question about medical billing classes?
Q. I'm a stay-at-home mom at the moment hoping to get back into the medical field in another year or so. I have my Masters in Health Administration and have practical experience with medical billing in my previous careers although my expertise is in medical software. My first question to anyone out there in the medical billing field, do employers look closer at candidates who have taken medical billing classes and become certified? How much is taking classes a factor in a decision vs. hands-on experience? I'd love to take classes, but don't want to get myself into school debt again if it is something that isn't really taken into consideration.
Asked by khyoung69 - Fri Nov 14 21:04:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your best bet is to buy some self-study materials and get your ahima ccs-P certification. You don't need to be certified especially if you have experience but it does help. If you'd done coding/billing and have hands on practice, get some self-study materials and go for it!

Is medical billing/coding a dying job?
Q. I am studying for this career but after a visit to the doctors office I am having second thoughts because the medical technician who took my information before the doctor came in told me that she used to be a coder in this office but her job has been replaced by the advent of the electronic medical record and the coding/billing software that is included in the program they have. She told me that the doctor no longer uses coders or medical transcriptionists because the software does it all. She told me my best bet was to be an medical technician as she is. It is very frustrating because I have paid 1700 dollars for the coding class I am currently in. Now I am afraid I have wasted my money.

A. Do your homework. There are a lot of people out there who only want to sell you the software. They market heavily which means there are plenty of other people out there who are trying the same thing as you. I'm not trying to discourage you because many people have made a decent living at it. It's just that there are a lot of people out there ready to take your money and run.
